In June 2025, Meta Platforms has made public the establishment of its new top-notch unit, Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL), which is to focus on the development of AI capabilities that will be so powerful that they will be unnoticed by the present ones.
This lab does not only concern itself with gradual improvements, it is an investment in “superintelligence”: machines that would be able to think, learn and perform with much greater freedom and power than the current models.
MSL is being structured for rapid development from large-language models to multi-agent systems. Its parent Meta has invested a lot in hiring and infrastructure, for instance, the reporting points to pay packages for top researchers exceeding or being around $100 million+ for several years.
One of the sources reported that MSL’s core team consisted of around 44 employees, which was a small but elite group; however, that number and the organization may have changed over time.
According to reports, MSL relies on a “small but talent-dense” organization instead of big teams with a lot of bureaucracy. MSL also revealed that it would be eliminating about 600 positions in its AI sector as a part of a broader strategy to enhance decision-making and to increase impact in October 2025.
This means much lesser dilation between conceptualization and model release, resulting in heightened demands on the researcher.
